The most fun though, was when we blew off the scenarios, and just went "all in" - Germans on the left, Russians on the right, and every piece on the board. ![]() No other board game has ever stacked up to that one - the detail is just phenomenal. I learned a lot of history from the explorations that Panzerblitz spawned. We bought books about WWII military hardware - we hung pictures of the planes and tanks on the walls. We played all the scenarios, and would stay up laaaate on Saturday nights at his house in 5 & 6 hour games. High and I were fanatics about this game. It's like a $5,000 board game or something with all that gear, not to mention the months of play. ![]() He had that setup going for about a year. He was playing by himself, recreating the Battle of the Bulge or some other famous tank-heavy battle turn by turn and not just playing the game but trying to accurately model the actual historical combat event and trying to glean data about, I suppose, actual engagements and one on one exchanges and their real world probabilities through the simulation. I go over to his place one day and he's replaced his dad's airplane hanger in the garage with miles of scale 3D full terrain hex-cell foam maps laid out with bridges and trees and rivers and little painted tanks and armored troop carriers and everything, set up across half a dozen tables and pretty much consuming the garage. Dad was a RC modeler, mom was into complicated fantasy and romance novel series and their German-American slacker Rasta son was into period re-enactment, sword fighting, RPGs and tac/strat games. His whole family was American Gothic otaku, house falling down around their ears and black sheep in the suburban neighborhood and everything. I believe I've mentioned that he was not only our local mid 20s GM but he was also officially an adviser in our officially sanctioned on-campus nerd club. The module is somewhat unfinished, so a little awkward in use, but still servicable enough to have a good game without all that much difficulty, I think.I had an odd friend/peer in High School, and I've mentioned him on MeFi in the sword nerd thread a while back. I wish anyone actually played this on Vassal. (I went for Dindrezi, my pal choose Sorylians) Still, I wish I had more, varied opponents. He's not raving about it, but likes it well enough that convincing him to have a go now and again isn't hard. I've only managed to convince one friend to try it with me. My only problem with it is not having much of anyone to play against. Very fun, if a little on the slow side for inexperienced players. The rules are simple but produce just enough tactical depth, and the fleets are quite finely balanced. I didn't like Battlefleet Gothic on paper and I'm not enough of a 40k fan to try it out in practice anyway.įirestorm has been great so far. Full Thrust looked promising for a while, but proved massively diappointing. I've been looking for a space fleet game I'd like for the longest time. Got into Firestorm Armada not long ago, and I must say I'm very happy with it (despite loosing my first two battles, and only drawing the third ^_^). Gravity guns to hurl ships into planets, massive nuclear torpedoes, huge mass drivers and rail cannons with engines, cloaked ships and dirty pirate ambushes, dog fighting small fighters and bombers.yeah it feels like it does more than BFG ever did and does it in a way that is far easier to use in play. A fleet that focuses on boarding and capturing enemy ships is one thing, a fleet that focuses on boarding and capturing enemy ships while also killing their crew with biohazard ammo and shutting down life support or point defence systems with cyberwarfare to make capturing the ship easier is better. ![]() Another big plus is the diversity of races (6 core and around a dozen minor plus mercenaries, raiders and pirates), styles and the host of cool special rules and effects and the strategies evolving from them. Originally I just planned on using the models and playing BFG but I found the Firestorm rules were just better. I've just recently gotten into it after having fond memories of Battlefleet Gothic. Is anyone here a player of Firestorm Armada? All the rules are free if you want to have a look
